Anthony is a Professor of Cardiology at Queen Mary University of London and the Director of Interventional Cardiology at Barts Health NHS Trust.

Academically, Anthony has raised over £25 million in funding and has published extensively in multiple areas related to cardiovascular medicine. He is a member of several boards, ranging from academic (European Society of Cardiology) to charity (Heart Cells Foundation).

Clinically, Anthony established one of Europe’s largest interventional cardiology services following the creation of the Barts Heart Centre six years ago. Anthony’s extensive experience in coronary intervention and therapeutic innovation (particularly regenerative medicine), alongside the current unmet needs of both academics and industry, incited his vision to create the CVDHub. He has led the Hub’s creation from conception to delivery and has recruited a multi-disciplinary team to fulfil its objectives.

Chas is a serial entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in the cardiovascular industry. He specialises in the creation, development and management of companies in interventional medicine.

He has founded, led and sold three companies, and has raised over £100 million in funding from private, venture capital, venture debt and corporate sources. Within the CVDHub, Chas provides consultancy and overall project leadership.

Nigel is a physicist who works with start-ups through to blue chips (Sharp & Philips), and has technical experience of consumer electronics, optical and diagnostic systems and medical devices.

He has spent the past 18 years supporting innovative companies secure grant funding to support their development objectives. He’s been personally responsible for raising over £250 million in grant funding to support technology development in the biomedical, diagnostic, ICT and green/clean tech sectors. Nigel is also a grant funding proposal reviewer for public agencies in the UK and the EU.

Rob received his medical degree, computing degree and PhD from the Free University in London, and became assistant and associate professor of the Thorax centre after working in the John Hopkins University (Baltimore, USA). He received several prizes, including the prestigious ‘Established Investigator’ of the DHF. He is the editor/co-editor of 13 journals, has published over 400 papers and has had over 30 papers cited >100 times.

In 2007 he became Professor of Cardiac Bioengineering at Imperial College and in 2018 he arrived at Queen Mary where he became a Professor in Molecular Bioengineering, a head of Division and the CVDHub’s Scientific Director.

Peter is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist based at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff and is an Honorary Professor at Cardiff University and Queen Mary University of London.

Alongside having a clinical and scientific interest in medical devices, Peter has expertise in the regulatory and health technology assessment of innovative technologies. Peter works with the MHRA as Chair of the Devices Expert Advisory Committee. Peter was previously Chair of the NICE Medical Technologies Advisory Committee and is currently NHS Chair on the NICE Appeals Panel. He promotes the adoption of novel medical devices in NHS Wales through his position as Chair of Health Technology Wales. He draws on this extensive experience to support and advise the CVDHub in all aspects of innovative medical device development and implementation.

Andreas is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist based at Barts Heart Centre and a Professor of Cardiology and Chair of Device Innovation at Queen Mary University of London.

Andreas is active in coronary and structural intervention and has published extensively in the field of interventional research covering preclinical, first in man, pivotal and post market studies. He has extensive expertise in device innovation and regulatory pathways and leads the Devices Theme of the NIHR Barts Biomedical Research Centre. Andreas has a strong commitment to training and education and is on the board of directors of the largest interventional congress EuroPCR and PCR London Valves. He is also the Immediate Past President of the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI).

Amrita is a Professor of Vascular Pharmacology at Queen Mary University of London. Her research interests revolve around developing and implementing the clinical translation of therapeutics targeting inflammation in the cardiovascular system.  

Amrita is the Director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Trials Unit (CVCTU), a branch of the Barts Clinical Trials Unit. Under Amrita’s leadership, the CVCTU has been established to manage and coordinate clinical trials with robust systems to ensure the highest quality standard of conduct and trial delivery. She is also the Chair of the CVCTU Scientific Committee which oversees the adoption of new studies into the CVCTU portfolio. 

Malcolm is a Consultant Cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre and holds honorary positions at University College London and Queen Mary University of London.

His research interests include the translation of basic engineering and bioengineering principles to commercial realisation and patient benefit, and he has raised over £5 million in investment and grants over the last 2 years. He has founded three spin-out companies: Epicardio Ltd, Echopoint Medical Ltd and Rhythm AI Ltd. He has a particular clinical interest in atrial fibrillation, and the development of treatment strategies and technologies for this common cardiac condition.

Silvia is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science, GOS Institute of Child Health & Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

She leads a group of engineers, computer scientists and clinical fellows working on applications of engineering methodologies to study cardiovascular disease. Her main interest is in patient specific computational modelling to optimise treatment, accelerate device development and enhance safety in first-in-man procedures. Silvia represents UCL and Great Ormond Street Hospital in the CVDHub, supporting collaborative research projects between the institutions.

Ryo is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Biomechanical Engineering Research Division in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University College London. 

Ryo’s research focuses on the development of novel methods in computational modelling and the application of these to investigate cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary heart disease. Specific topics include computational modelling of blood flow and biomechanical stress calculations in atherosclerotic coronary arteries, stented/grafted vessels and patients with LVAD. With his technical expertise, he has been working closely with a large number of clinicians at Barts Heart Centre, underpinning clinical research activities.

Alex’s background is in biomedical engineering, specifically medical device design, and he holds an MSc degree from Imperial College London having specialised in biomaterials and tissue engineering.

Alex manages a portfolio of academic and SME projects, supporting collaborations between clinicians, academics and industry to optimise successful pathways to market for medical devices.

With a background in clinical trial management and coordination, Sheik has extensive experience in the set up and management of cardiovascular trials. Over recent years he has been focused on European Commission funded projects, putting him in a great position to oversee the CVDHub’s compliance with EC regulations.

Sheik works closely with rest of the compliance team, providing expertise on the delivery of clinical investigations and ensuring the project’s smooth delivery.

Jack has a background in research governance and regulations. He is an expert in setting up research projects from both the sponsor’s and the manufacturer’s perspective and works closely with all parties involved to ensure a pragmatic approach.

His extensive experience in research governance and medical device regulation enables him to efficiently support the planning, set-up and logistical considerations of clinical investigations. As part of the CVDHub’s compliance team, Jack also ensures we align with our funding and regulatory requirements.

Emma has a strong background in Clinical Trial Management and monitoring, with a particular focus on research governance and data management. She has worked across the NHS and pharma industry on all aspects of trial set up and delivery.

Her experience in managing systems and quality control will ensure accurate data capture and compliance with regulatory and funding regulations.
